Aussies of the Magic Mic and Adobo Kind world premiere at the Sydney Fringe Festival 2011
Think of Sydney’s vast and varied population, and you initially think of the cultural groups that have made this city their home. The Greek community, the Italian community, the Vietnamese. The Filipino community, by and large, barely get a look in.
In Aussies of the Magic Mic and Adobo Kind, the Filipino community is presented in a no-holds-barred comedic production brought to the Sydney Fringe Festival by two of its own, Rosary Coloma and Erica Enriquez. First-time producers and passionate about their heritage, Coloma and Enriquez want to show Sydney how funny, messy, embarrassing and downright beautiful it is to be a Filipino-Australian in 2011.
The idea came about after many discussions, usually fuelled by food and drink, between Coloma and Enriquez about how under-represented the Filipino community was in Sydney. Their discussions led to rants, which led to bouts of hand-on-the-heart declarations of pride in their backgrounds, which led to , “Sige na! Mag produce na tayo!” (Translation: “Fine! Let’s produce this!”).
To be staged in Sydney’s most iconic neighbourhood for Italian-Australians, The Cultural Centre at the Italian Forum in Leichhardt, Aussies of the Magic Mic and Adobo Kind aims to amuse all people, regardless of background.
So what does, “Aussies of the Magic Mic and Adobo Kind”, mean? It explains another way to be Australian – the Filipino way, complete with sing-alongs on a Magic Mic setup for Karaoke sessions, and pots filled to the brim with one of the most recognisable Filipino dishes – Adobo.
Comprising a cast of talented Filipino-Australian artists, Aussies of the Magic Mic and Adobo Kind will show at:
The Cultural Centre at the Italian Forum, Leichhardt
23 Norton Street
Leichhardt 2040

September 29 and 30, and October 1st, at 6:30pm.
